Migraine - Therapy: therapy and treatment

In the case of acute measures for migraines, the focus is on drug therapy or treatment, which should be started as early as possible. We should know about migraine therapy.

Drug therapy for migraine

Frequently used as a drug in the treatment of migraine are triptans: serotonin receptor agonists, which pretend to be the brain to be the messenger serotonin and thus exert their effect. In therapy, they are faster for some sufferers when taken with a hot drink.

Exceptions are those who suffer from a migraine with aura: You should wait with the use of strong anti-migraine drugs such as triptans or ergotamine until the aura is over, otherwise, the risk of stroke may be increased.

If those affected are also plagued by nausea, it is recommended to take an antidote and vomiting medication, such as metoclopramide (MCP) or domperidone, ideally 15 to 30 minutes prior to triptan or other analgesics such as aspirin, ibuprofen or paracetamol. This also promotes the gastrointestinal activity and thus the absorption of other medicines during the treatment. As soon as this antiemetic works, you should drink a lot - preferably still mineral water.

Alternative ways of pain relief

Some sufferers help against migraine rubbing the temples with peppermint oil as soon as an attack starts. Drinking coffee can also have a positive effect on treatment.

Many sufferers also report that pressing both sides of acupressure points helps to reduce the onset of migraine headaches. Acupressure points include the troughs between the thumb and forefinger, between the temples and the eyebrow end, and between the beginning of the eyebrow and the root of the nose.
