In the past, much research was done to find out the causes of migraine and its symptoms. Nevertheless, the genesis is still unclear. The scientists are largely in agreement that several factors have to interact in order to cause migraines or susceptibility to it. The predisposition for migraine may be inherited. We should know about Migraines Causes and Risk Factors.
Migraines - Causes and Risk Factors |
Trigger for migraine
Causes are special, individually different triggers. Such internal or external stimuli can be, for example:
- Certain foods or alcoholics
- Stress factors
- Changes in the daily routine
- Lack of sleep
- Noise
- Weather changes
- Drugs
- The menstrual period
Theories on the cause of migraine
In principle, it is possible to distinguish between theories that suspect the causative disorder in the brain and those that assume that functional disorders are the cause of the vegetative/hormonal system in humans.
The former includes the hypothesis that the blood vessels in the brain can not adapt properly to the respective situation or that the messenger substances (in particular serotonin) as a result of functional disorders of the nerve cells ("migraine generator" in the brainstem area) lead to overreaction.
In contrast, the followers of functional disorder assume that influences throughout the body system are seen as causes of migraines. These influences include, for example, improper diet, imbalance of hormones or stress. The consequence is that the nervous system becomes more susceptible to overreacting to otherwise harmless stimuli (comparable to the immune system in case of an allergy).
